Danish Dancers' reply
Submitted by Danish Amateur Latin Dancers
05 Nov 2007
Saturday evening saw unprecedented action taken by the entire field of Danish amateur dancers, as they all united and refused to compete in their national Latin championship. The reason for such a drastic step was a desperate attempt to get the Danish amateur board to listen to and understand their needs.
For quite some time now the dancers have felt that a few people sitting at the top of the Danish amateur association are completely out of touch with the requirements of a top competitor today, and are making their own decisions without listening to what is in the best interest for the dancers. Having tried to get a dialog going on previous occasions without success the dancers felt they had to stand together to get their point across……and they certainly did!!
Not wanting to let down neither the audience nor the sponsors of the championships, all the “competitors” still appeared on the dance floor without numbers on their backs, and delighted the audience with a show of high quality Latin American dancing. For the finale they all joined in a big circle dancing rumba to Michael Jackson’s “Make the World a Better Place”. The support from the audience was amazing and the dancers received one standing ovation after the other. Many tears were shed, as everybody felt passionate about the dancers’ cause and were fully aware what the dancers had given up with this action.
At the end of the prize presentation the dancers decided to award their Danish championship to Martino Zanibellato & Michelle Abildtrup, who were clearly in the lead in the charts all year, and would therefore have been the likely winners, had they all competed. In fact, this would have been their first Danish championship, which made the whole event an even more emotional for them
It is extremely important for the Danish dancers that the World should know that in no way should this action be seen as if the dancers are involving themselves in the current international conflict between the IDSF and the WDC. It is a TOTALLY a national matter between the Danish dancers and their Danish amateur board. The dancers are simply trying to fight for the principle for any dancer’s right to compete freely, and NOT to be used as pawns in this – or any other – conflict.
